Guiding Principles

at Silver Oaks Cooperative School

CHILD CENTERED TEACHING & LEARNING

While Silver Oaks Cooperative has a curriculum and suggested pacing, we understand that children do not always adapt to our guidelines. We believe that any curriculum and content learning should adapt to the children in a class, and offer opportunities for playing, touching, and experiencing. We strive to offer content learning that is in-depth and focuses on opportunities for critical thinking, collaboration, creative innovation and presentation of ideas.

EMBRACE THE NATURAL WORLD

We believe the outdoors provide one of the most important sources of inspiration in children’s lives, and that this generation will face unprecedented environmental challenges. Silver Oaks’ students spend half their days outdoors on our beautiful campus. We go outside in all weather, rain, snow or shine. We instill a love and appreciation of nature and base many units on our natural environment.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

We prioritize the social and emotional needs of the children. We believe that children are people, equal to adults and deserving of our highest respect. We also believe that children are learning how to navigate the world and all of its complexities, and it is our job to coach them. Our classrooms are free of extrinsic motivational tools as we strive to develop an intrinsic love of learning and joy in the classroom.

PREPARING FUTURE THINKERS & DOERS

Silver Oaks Cooperative School strives to be an inclusive community of educators, children and families, celebrating our differences and uniqueness, and preparing children to be future thinkers & doers.  We work with an intentional curriculum and with a continued focus on providing inclusive and inquisitive classroom cultures.

COOPERATIVE APPROACH

We are a community of educators, children, and families. Parents and guardians should play a critical role in their children’s education.
