CHILD-CENTERED TEACHING & LEARNING

At Silver Oaks, we begin with the individual student. We use a rigorous, research-based curriculum with high expectations while recognizing that students learn at different rates and in different ways.

What this looks like evolves as students grow, from building foundational skills in kindergarten to fostering increasing independence and deeper critical thinking in middle school. Our teachers know their students well and use daily observations, conversations, and student work to provide the right level of support or challenge. This may include adjusting instruction or placing students in different instructional groups or levels to ensure continued growth.

Being child-centered means knowing every student well and providing what they need to be successful.

NATURE AS A CLASSROOM

At Silver Oaks, nature is an important part of every student's education. Students spend time outdoors every day, in every season, enjoying unstructured play, outdoor physical education, and regular learning experiences in the woods behind our school. Time in nature supports physical health, emotional well-being, curiosity, and a sense of wonder. It also helps students develop respect for the environment and understand their responsibility as thoughtful stewards of the natural world.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)

At Silver Oaks, we believe that students are people first. They deserve to be known, respected, and supported as they learn to navigate emotions, relationships, challenges, and the world around them. We view behavior as communication. When a student struggles, we work to understand what they are telling us, whether they need support with expectations, self-regulation, problem-solving, connection, or a new skill. Our teachers, aides, administrators, and families work together to help students grow.

Through Responsive Classroom practices, morning meetings, middle school SEL programming, and intentional community-building, we teach students how to reflect, repair, make responsible choices, and build positive relationships. We focus on clear expectations, practice, encouragement, and individualized support so every student can thrive.

THINK CRITICALLY, ACT COMPASSIONATELY

Silver Oaks Cooperative School strives to be an inclusive community where students learn to appreciate differences, consider multiple perspectives, and understand their role in the world. Through intentional curriculum, classroom experiences, and opportunities for service, students develop curiosity, empathy, critical thinking, and the confidence to engage with their communities.

We prepare students to be thoughtful citizens who can collaborate, advocate, solve problems, and take meaningful action.

THE COOPERATIVE APPROACH

At Silver Oaks, we believe schools are strongest when educators and families work together in partnership. Founded by families who wanted a different kind of educational experience, our school continues to be shaped by the involvement, commitment, and support of our community.

Families contribute their time, talents, and perspectives in meaningful ways—from supporting classrooms and school operations to participating in the life of the school. This intentional partnership creates a strong sense of connection, trust, and transparency while allowing educators to focus on what they do best: providing a thoughtful, responsive education for students.

We believe education is an ongoing process of learning and growth. Through open communication, reflection, and a shared commitment to students, we continue to strengthen our school community and evolve together.
